In an industry where sequels are the rule it’s still surprisingly rare for a film franchise to make it to number 5. Typically that franchise needs to have visceral thrills of which an audience will never tire, things like car chases The Fast and the Furious , exploding viscera Final Destination , Saw , Resident Evil , A Nightmare on Elm Street , laserbeams Star Trek , or small black women shouting into bullhorns Police Academy.
The first “Step Up” movie came out on Aug. (), “Step Up 2: The Streets” (), “Step Up 3D” () and “Step Up Revolution” ().
Step Up Revolution treads familiar territory by surrounding its lively and kinetic dance sequences with a predictably generic story. Rate this movie.

The film sparked a franchise whose fourth installment,”Step Up Revolution,” opens Friday. McCormick plays Emily, aspiring professional dancer and love interest of Sean Guzman , a lowly staffer at Emily’s father’s hotel who dances with a local group called The Mob. They show off their skills through flash mobs around Miami; first, the pop-up performances are just to seek exposure, but they turn into a protest against a hotel development that would bulldoze the neighborhood Sean and his friends grew up in.
Before talking to the co-stars about filming in Miami, the variety of dance styles in the movie and whether Guzman intends to follow in Tatum’s “Magic Mike” footsteps, we kicked off our recent interview at the Trump Hotel with a dance battle.

August 08, Reviews. Once, his incredible dance prowess stood in comic contrast to his nerdy appearance. Now, he looks more comfortable dancing with beautiful women than wearing his lab suit. In small doses, Moose was a delight. As for original Step Up star Channing Tatum, he got the hell out long ago and never looked back. Unable to find jobs, and running out of the money they made from a Nike ad six months earlier, Asa and his crew discover an opportunity that could change their lives: a VH-1 reality dance competition called The Vortex that promises its winner a three-year television contract.
The Vortex is hosted by Alexxa Brava Izabella Miko , a Lady Gaga figure whose eye-rolling, head-swiveling, twitchy performance suggests she sees the film as a feature-length audition for the Gina Gershon role in a Showgirls remake. Like Lady Gaga, Alexxa delights in turning herself into a living piece of topiary—think the hedge maze in The Shining, only as a sexy lady—and her enormous, elaborate, yet revealing outfits are triumphs of design and construction. Step Up All In throws in a sequence of children dancing that does nothing to advance the plot, but does offer the crowd-pleasing spectacle of adorable tots busting moves.
It would not be terribly surprising if a deleted scene features the cast playing with kittens and puppies for five minutes while gyrating lazily.

Before I start this review, let me preface this by saying I’m a fan of musicals. I grew up watching James Brown, Michael Jackson, and Fred Astaire, and I even practiced their moves while viewing their movies and music videos. There was a certain quality to them that has not been lived up to in a long time.
A year later, they can’t even get an audition in the ultra-competitive world of professional dance. Most of the group is ready to return to their Miami roots, but Sean is determined to conquer Hollywood, even if he has to do it alone. Sean reconnects with his old pal Moose Adam Sevani through work at a mom-and-pop dance studio. But he soon has his eye on a much bigger prize: ‘The Vortex,” a reality television series that pits the best dance crews from all over the country against each other, with the winner receiving a three-year contract in a top Las Vegas venue.
Sean and Moose quickly assemble LMNTRIX, a dance crew that features some of their most talented colleagues, including the beautiful and headstrong Andie West Briana Evigan , whose take-no-prisoners approach to dance matches Sean’s own. With all three groups putting everything they’ve got into the winner-take-all fight to the finish on live television, the stage is set for the most innovative and over-the-top performances yet in a series that has become an international box office phenomenon.
In , Jennifer Gibgot and her brother Adam Shankman launched a worldwide dance juggernaut with the first Step Up, a high-energy hip-hop romance that paired a street-smart b-boy with an ambitious ballerina.
